There were an estimated 37,930 cases of AIDS diagnosed in 2005, 26% of which were in adult or adolescent women.(1) The incidence of AIDS is most prevalent among women of color. HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death for Black women age 25 to 34 years in 2004.(2)

The Report Card benchmark is the Healthy People 2010 goal of having an AIDS incidence rate of no more than 1 new case per 100,000 population (when applied to women) [Healthy People 2010 Objective 13-1].
